City Link Magazine Opening Night Recap

"Geez, they better have a roller coaster up there," muttered one art lover who waited in line for about an hour to check out For Love of Munny, the inaugural show of the new Bear and Bird boutique and art space at Tate's Comics Feb. 3....

White Powdered Doughnuts Opening Night Recap

This past Saturday Feb 3, 2007 saw the first wave of the Munny invasion hit South Florida. The Bear and Bird Boutique, located inside Tate’s Comics in Ft Lauderdale, hosted its first custom Munny show appropriately titled “For Love of Munny”. The 700 square foot wood floored loft gallery could hardly contain the throngs of avid vinyl toy fans that showed up for the opening night.

Toy Toons Opening Night Recap

Eager guests formed a polite line through the gallery (just inside and upstairs of Tate’s comics) to see more than 200 custom Munnies mainly by Florida natives. Better-known artists such as Kathie Olivas and Colin Christian helped out too. The Munnies ran from very cute to very creepy.

...the For the Love of Munny show at Bear & Bird in Ft. Lauderdale, opening this Saturday night, February 3rd at 7PM, shows once again that the little guy's blank (not to say bland) shape can be a stage which leaves its actors free to interpret their roles as they wish. Benefiting the Humane Society of Broward County, the show will have well over 200 custom Munnys when the doors open this Saturday night. As the accompanying photos show, the artists involved did not lack for inspiration, nor exotic ideas and materials, nor a willingness to devote the time and effort required to accomplish these spectacular results.

Saturday 03: For Love of Munny Opening Reception
More than 100 Munny dolls, from the freakishly creepy to the cute and cuddly, will take over the newly opened Bear and Bird Gallery for its inaugural art show. This exhibit will feature custom-painted Munnys by 111 local and national artists (including the one pictured at left by James "Jimbot" Demski). Some of the artists -- such as Jamie Ryscik, Pooch, Skot Olsen and Ted McKeever -- will attend the opening-night reception. The reception will also offer wine and cheese, along with live music by Elyse. The dolls are available for sale in the gallery or on the gallery's Web site, and 10 percent of profits will be donated to the Humane Society of Broward County. The show will run through March 10, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays.

The fink and el Carron seem to eye each other on the counter. They're made from the same vinyl mold, with the same low-hanging ears, slight tummy bulge, and wide stance, but "they're not in the same universe," Ryscik says. "One cares about the water. The other just wants to find an enemy." Still, these two Munny dolls — part of an exploding international art toy craze, also called "urban vinyl" — will stand side by side on February 3 through March 10 at the opening show of Amanda Magnetta's new boutique and gallery, Bear and Bird.

New Times Miami Article
Eddie "E.F." Angel and Luis Diaz are 23 and 29 years old, respectively, but they still play with toys. Both are avid collectors: Superman, Transformers, Ninja Turtles, "and a lot of Freddy Krueger stuff," Diaz adds, indicating a snarling, foot-and-a-half-tall Freddy atop his refrigerator. You can distinguish Diaz's small fourth-floor apartment from the rest in his gated complex by the twenty or so action figures staring motionless out the window, as if from a satanic Santa's workshop. These days the veteran plastic warriors are just for show. But one toy, at least, will get some action tonight. (continued...)
