Skot Olsen's Frankenstein
This exhibition featured hundreds of Skot Olsen’s original, sepia-painted panels from Graphics Classics, illustrating comic writer Rod Lott's adaptation of the original classic by Mary Shelley. Graphics Classics is a series of books (graphic novels) presenting illustrated adaptations of great fiction for contemporary readers, ages 12 to adult. Each volume features the works of the world's greatest authors, illustrated by some of the best artists working today in the fields of comics, illustration and fine arts.
Olsen's illustrations for an adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic tale appears in Volume 15 of the Graphics Classic series. The artist created individual, sepia-toned paintings for each panel of the story. His singular style is visible on each panel.
Exhibition run dates: August 2 - August 30, 2008

Reviews of Fantasy Classics, Volume 15:
"Skot Olsen interprets the tale with a delightful Gothic-cartoony feel that balances sympathy for the monster with its horrible nature." - Zack Davisson
"Skot Olsen’s beautifully painted artwork for Frankenstein is the crown jewel of this volume. Olsen paints a vivid, descriptive canvas and readers are drawn in to the wet shimmering reality of the European landscape and the tortured monster." - Mike Gagnon
"In just 46 pages, Lott and Olsen convey the mood and meaning of Frankenstein as well as any movie adaptation ever has…" - avclub.com
About Artist Skot Olsen: Skot Olsen's work is collected by an international population of art enthusiasts. His work is distinguishable for its cartoony style, and use of swirling clouds and landscapes. The December 2007 fire during Art Basel, at the Harold Golen Gallery, obliterated about two and a half years of Olsen's work. The Frankenstein exhibition at Bear and Bird was a rare opportunity for collectors to buy an affordable and enduring piece by this notable artist.
